'SUEZ  VETERANS  ASSOCIATION'

Proposed additional information sign at the

Suez Veterans Memorial Garden

National Memorial Arboretum - Alrewas.

Since the commemoration of refurbishment of the Suez Veterans Memorial and site at Alrewas on the 31st March this year there have been many messages from members, and others, saying how much they like the new Memorial and the revised lay-out of the Plot and remark it is a job well done and a great improvement.  However, there have been comments from a few that the different Regiments or Corps who served in the Zone are not mentioned anywhere within the Plot and suggestions have been made that they should be included in some way.

With this in mind, and knowing the Arboretum require Memorials to have as much descriptive information as possible, the Committee discussed the idea and considered it to be a necessary addition which will add to the information already on display and create more interest in the Memorial.  It will also be helpful in years to come when some youngster asks, “Who were the Suez Veterans daddy?”

Brian Watts, who took charge of the arrangements for the new Memorial and Plot lay-out and liaised with the Arboretum Grounds Committee, (the controlling body for Memorials), has made the proposal that the Regiment and Corps names be engraved on stainless steel built into an imitation open paged book on a sign made to match, as much as possible, the existing two signs, same height, same angle but measuring approximately 4 ft x 3 ft and sited at the top of the Plot near to the seat.  A list of the Branches, Regiments and Corps that we know served in the Canal Zone has been made and is shown below,

Of course something of this nature is costly and if anyone would like to make a donation to help with the finances your generosity would be most appreciated and you will have the satisfaction of helping in producing something that will be on show for many years.  If you do wish to donate please make your cheque or postal order payable to:
‘The Suez Veterans Association’ and write ‘Memorial’ on the back and send to our Treasurer,
Cedric Barker,  2 Kirkstone Drive,  Thornton Cleveleys,  FY5 1QJ
.

Thank you.

Our thanks to the members who have told us about their Regiment / Corps not being included on the list, we apologise for
this but their absence was not intentional, we just need to be reminded of things at times.

The lists have now been sent to the engraver.
