Austin / Wolseley Champ

An e-mail has come into the website asking if I could help with information about an old ex Army Austin Champ. (But it might have been a Wolseley, they didn’t say.) The writer is investigating the history of a Champ they own and its records show that it was used by the RASC in Suez with the Army registration number – 56BE99.

During renovations they found it had originally been painted in desert colour and had a square insignia -
blue triangle top left, over yellow triangle lower right, with the number 40.

I understand this denoted 40 Coy RASC.

They have already contacted Army records about this vehicle with no luck.
Was this Champ in your unit, or did you drive it at sometime?  It would be nice to know.

Any information would be welcome which I will pass on to the person asking.

I don't know the story of how they got it, or where from, or how long they have had it, but it is interesting to know that somewhere in Essex there is an old ex Suez Canal Zone Army Champ still knocking around with someone looking after it.  If I find out any more interesting information about its present circumstances I will add them to this message.

Request for photographs.

I am preparing a book of photographs involving the Suez Crisis during November 1956.  If other would like to have their photos included to ensure that these images, - ships, aircraft, general views, troops, paratroop drops, etc., are not lost to posterity, would they care to scan at high resolution and send them to me by e-mail, or loan them to me briefly for scanning and possible enhancing if necessary, together with appropriate information?
I am the complier of the books, - 'The Royal Engineers and the National Service Years' and, 'A history of the Corps in Photographs', - of some ten years ago.

78 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
I received the following e-mail from Sgt Tony Hibberd of R.A.F. Benson on Wednesday 24th November 2010 and it is hoped some ex 78 Squadron lads can help him.

Hallo Richard
I am contacting you to hopefully gain your assistance with a request for (hopeful?) co-operation from your membership. I am the Voluntary History Officer for 78 Sqn, and I am continuing to enhance the displays in the Memorial Room within our Hangar here at RAF Benson.  If you would be kind enough to ensure the following paragraph can either be reproduced on your website notice board or in a postal newsletter, I would be most grateful . . .

78 Squadron Royal Air Force transferred to the Middle East Command in September 1945, initially flying Douglas DC3 Dakota Mk IV's from Al Mazra, Kabrit and Fayid. Later converting onto the Vickers Valetta C1, 78 Sqn continued to operate all across the region until disbandment at Fayid in September 1954.  This is without doubt the least archived era in the history of 78 Sqn. If any of your membership either served on 78 Sqn, or at Al Mazra, Kabrit or Fayid during this time, I would be extremely grateful for copies of any anecdotes and especially aircraft related images (I have hardly any images of the Dakota or Valetta in 78 Sqn service) . . .

I can be contacted at my civilian email address:
tonyhibberd752@yahoo.co.uk or via the postal address below:

With thanks in advance for your co-operation.

Information wanted.
I received the following e-mail on 15th December 2009. Can anyone help?

Use of Daimler armoured vehicles in the Suez Crisis and Egypt .
Dear Sirs
I am in the fortunate position of being the owner of a 1944 Daimler Dingo Scout car and also a 1942 Daimler Armoured car. Both vehicles have been restored to road worthy condition and are now used for military shows, parades and for poppy appeal collecting through out the south east of England .
In September 09 they were driven to Arnhem in commemoration of the 65th anniversary of Operation Market Garden and have been appropriately marked with the insignia of the Household Cavalry and Guards Armoured Corps.
The private owners of these rare vehicle have clubbed together through the internet group the ‘dingo register’ and I am responsible for the research into the vehicles historic use.
The results of three years of research work are published on:   www.daimler-fighting-vehicles.co.uk
I would be very greateful if any of your ex servicemen would like to share any stories or experiences of interest regarding these vehicles.
In addition we would especially be interested in seeing any photos’ of the cars in service.  Photos can be used to check that we have accurately kitted out the cars as they would have been in the past. And also to sometimes to obtain a picture of surviving cars with there service unit.
Sadly the WD records were mostly destroyed when the cars left service.
Thanks for you valuable assistance
Regards.  Mr Stjohn Ager.  Kent UK.

Information wanted.

A member has been reading the biography of Capt W E Johns, who wrote the 'Biggles' books, and read that after serving at Gallipoli Capt John was posted to El Firdan.  He also spent time at Kubri, Sidi Bishr and Crewe's Post.
We know where El Firdan is but does anyone know whereabouts in Egypt the other three places were?
If you know, please tell me so I can pass on the information to the person enquiring.
