RIP Brian Watts SVAIt is with sadness that I have to report the passing of member 396 Brian Watts of Kirby Muxloe.
Brian was the National Secretary of the Suez Veterans' Association from 2011 until his passing and Area Representative for Area 9, Leicestershire and Warwickshire.
During his time in his post as Secretary he put in a lot of work for the Association and was instrumental, with help from his family and acquaintances, in the design, construction and refurbishment of the Association's Memorial Garden at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in Staffordshire in March 2012.
Brian served in the RAOC and his time in the Canal Zone was spent at 10 BOD at Geneifa 1953-55.
His funeral was held on Friday 3rd November in Leicester. He had a good send off with over a hundred people in the Chanel, many having to stand at the back. Suez Veterans were well represented, a large number there. Unfortunately the National SVA Standard was unable to be there but Stuart Pope attended with the Leicester and Warwickshire Suez Veterans Standard.
The service was well taken by the Rev. Peter Folk, the poem 'Far Away In A Foreign Land' was read by Tony Spray (SVA Quartermaster), Cedric Barker (SVA Treasurer) spoke a few words about how he and Brian had worked together on the SVA Committee, Jeff Malone (SVA Newsletter Editor) played the 'Last Post' and 'Reveille', and Brian Wells (SVA Aea Rep for Leicester and district) recited the 'Exhortation'. Entrance music was Jo Stafford singing 'You Belong To Me' and the exit music was 'Mack The Knife' by Bobby Darin. The hymn sung in the service was 'Abide With Me'.
A wreath in the shape of a pyramid, given by son Johnm will be taken by him to the National Memorial Arboretum and placed on the Suez Veterans' Association Memorial Garden.
After the service refreshments were laid on at the Royal Oak hotel in Brian's home town of Kirby Muxloe.
Rest in Peace old pal and thank you.
